Listen, Decode, Solve!

There’s something about a mystery that instantly makes learning more exciting.

A cookie has disappeared, three suspects are waiting, and young detectives have a case to solve. But there’s a catch—they’ll need to use their beginning-sound skills to crack the code and discover who ate the cookie!

Who Ate the Cookie? turns early phonics practice into a playful little investigation where every sound brings children one step closer to solving the mystery.

Listen for the Sound

The activity begins with a row of numbered pictures. Children look at each picture, say its name aloud, listen carefully for the beginning sound, and write the letter that represents that sound.

That simple step gives children meaningful practice with an important early literacy skill: hearing a sound in a spoken word and connecting it to the letter that represents it.

Instead of identifying beginning sounds in isolation, children have a reason to pay attention.

Each letter is a clue.

Crack the Code

Once the letters have been discovered, the mystery isn’t over.

A number code tells children which letters to place in the boxes and in what order. Now they have to go back to their answers, follow the numbers, and transfer the correct letters.

One clue at a time, a secret name begins to appear.

This extra decoding step adds a little challenge without making the activity overwhelming. Children aren’t simply completing another beginning-sound exercise—they’re using what they figured out to solve something new.

That little shift can make familiar phonics practice feel much more like a game.

At the bottom of the worksheet, three adorable suspects are waiting: Bumble, Bumper, and Bundle.

Children read the name they decoded, find the character with the matching name, write the answer, and color the picture.

And just like that, the case is solved!
